TANNERHECHT is a full service architectural firm with offices in
San Francisco and San Diego.

TANNERHECHT is dedicated to cultivating a creative sense of discovery and interchange between clients and colleagues. The main office, located in the heart of San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, functions as an open environment for associates to create smart, intuitive, and well thought out buildings. Collaboration is an important element in the TANNERHECHT process. We work closely with our clients, listen to their ideas, and develop a productive dialogue throughout the design process. One of our greatest strengths is our ability to realize and defend initial architectural design concepts through the rigorous entitlements, cost estimating, and construction processes that are typical of civic and urban projects.
Since 1980, founders James Tanner and David Hecht have served a broad array of public and private-sector clients, bringing a hands-on, highly collaborative design approach to each project. TannerHecht’s work in urban infill developments, multi-stakeholder community-based projects and commercial interiors has been recognized by awards and publications, regionally and nationally.

Principals
James Tanner
James Tanner, AIA, NCARB is a founding Principal of TANNERHECHT Inc. and has practiced architecture in California since 1970. In 1976 he founded a sole practice which has transformed into what is now TANNERHECHT Architecture. With experience that ranges from adaptive re-use and historic renovation, to leading-edge experimental design, Mr. Tanner’s buildings have become a seminal part of California’s landscape. Selected projects from his more than thirty years of practicing architecture include: ICON, an urban mixed-use high-rise residential project in San Diego; the Palomar Hotel San Diego, a high-rise hotel; and the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum. A consistent element of success is Mr. Tanner’s ability to logically guide sensitive projects through various planning, building, environmental and community agencies. Mr. Tanner’s experience and intuitive sense of design has earned him the respect of the design community worldwide, including a Hall of Fame honor from the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston. His works and lectures have been recognized by a wide-range of international awards and publications. Mr. Tanner manages the firm’s San Diego office.

David Hecht
David Hecht, AIA, LEED AP is a founding Principal of TANNERHECHT Inc. and has practiced architecture in California since 1987. His extensive design and building experience ranges from single-family homes to religious, commercial, academic, hospitality and multi-family buildings as well as numerous corporate headquarters. Mr. Hecht’s distinctive structures have received numerous design awards and have been featured in international publications. The Cannery Lofts, winner of an Orange County AIA Honor Award, as well as the Builder’s Choice Project of the Year Award, consists of the architecture and urban design for an entire city block in Newport Beach, California. Mr. Hecht manages the firm’s San Francisco office.

644 Broadway is part of a vibrant mixed-use
renovation project located at the juncture of San Francisco’s Chinatown and
North Beach neighbourhoods. 644 Broadway is an existing four-story, 42,000
square feet mixed use building that formerly housed the Gold Mountain Dim Sum
Restaurant, a subterranean 437-seat movie theatre, and dental offices. The
adjacent 660 Broadway is a former pet store with residential units above. Both
buildings have been extensively altered and combined to house an eclectic mix
of creative tenants including China Live, a destination Chinese food emporium
with restaurants and lounges, Boxcar Theatre company, an immersive live cabaret
theatre experience, Disher Sound Studios, FilmHouse X, and the San Francisco
Film Society’s Filmmaker-in-Residence program.

TANNERHECHT provided full architectural
services to upgrade the core and shell of both buildings, which included new
communicating openings at the ground floor, new restrooms and corridors on the
upper floors, new air conditioning and lighting systems throughout as well as
exit stair upgrades and a new entry on Broadway. In addition, TANNERHECHT
provided tenant improvement design services for the San Francisco Film Society,
Disher Sound Studios, and the Boxcar Theatre Company.

The project received the United States Green
Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED Gold-CS for Core & Shell projects in
mid-April. It was an adventurous path to Gold with our visionary clients at
Cypress Properties Group, engineering consultants MHC Engineers, stellar
contractor, CCI General Contractors, and Urban Fabrick, our green building
consultant. We thank everyone on the team for their dedication and
determination to achieve this admirable environmental goal.

As a follow-on to the highly successful La Mesa
Quarry project, Crossroads was conceived as a family friendly residential
project. It was constructed on a difficult site comprised of disused shopping
center properties and parking lots sandwiched between freeway ramps, busy city
streets, and a creek bed along one side.

Comprised of three structures in three- and
four-story configurations with one- and two-bedroom units around a central
courtyard, the campus makes a welcoming gathering space for families and
neighbors away from parking concealed behind the buildings. All residential
entrances are accessed from the courtyard using the same Quarry project concept
of walk-up, through-building flats. The project provides townhome experience
with multi-directional views and generous in-unit amenities.
