The historic 1935 Federal Building in San Diego’s Balboa Park was fully restored to allow for the installation of a modern museum and exhibition space inside while preserving and integrating the Mayan-inspired exterior. A multi-media sports museum, arena and theatre provides a venue for sporting and cultural events while also creatively challenging the way we experience and learn from sports history. The museum entry, a wedge-shaped opening modeled after the Palace of Governors at Uxmal, leads the visitor to the large volume beyond, framed by a 75” steel bridge and a dramatic cascading staircase to the lower level. Exhibits use a variety of media, from video screens to interactive computer stations and a series of “hands on” sports experiences.
